Golf is always easier when you can leave the putter in the bag.

And that’s precisely what Englishman Justin Rose did on the par-3 14th hole in the first round of the 108th PGA Championship at Aronimink on Thursday.

Rose had a bumpy start to the first round with two bogeys on the front nine at the place where he won the AT&T National in 2010. After a birdie on the par-4 13th hole where he made a 7-foot putt, Rose’s tee shot on the 221-yard, par-3 14th hole found a left greenside bunker.

It was no problem for Rose. He splashed the ball out of the sand and right into the hole for an unlikely birdie that got the 2011 U.S. Open winner right down the road at Merion back to even par for the day and just three shots off the clubhouse lead.
