Potgieter turned professional in 2023 and made his major championship debut at that year's Masters Tournament at Augusta National. He has five major starts to his name entering Aronimink, with his lone cut made coming at the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, where he finished 64th.

This week marks his first PGA Championship appearance. Potgieter qualified for the PGA Championship after winning in a playoff at the Mexico Open in June 2025.
