Played two seasons (2015-17) at Louisiana State University, electing to turn professional after a breakout sophomore season which saw him earn the 2017 Jack Nicklaus Award, in addition to being named the 2017 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year.

In two seasons at LSU, earned four collegiate victories (tied for the second-most career wins in school history, only behind David Toms' six wins in the 1980s), and broke school records for single-season scoring average (70.047 as a sophomore in 2016-17) and career scoring average (71.127).

Named the 2014 AJGA Rolex Junior Player of the Year. Past recipients of the award include Scottie Scheffler (2013), Jordan Spieth (2009), Brian Harman (2003, 2004), Tiger Woods (1991, 1992), David Duval (1989), and Phil Mickelson (1986, 1987, 1988).

Decorated junior career included a victory at the 2014 Junior PGA Championship, contested at Miramont Country Club in Bryan, Texas. Burns' victory came one year after a runner-up finish at the 2013 Junior PGA Championship.

Won the 2014 Rolex Tournament of Champions, a premier AJGA event, in record-breaking fashion. Totaled 21-under 267 to break the AJGA 72-hole scoring record. Finished atop a field which included Collin Morikawa (3rd), Doug Ghim (4th), Davis Riley (T7), and Nick Hardy (T14).

Represented the United States at the 2014 Junior Ryder Cup; his teammates included future PGA TOUR winner Davis Riley, and Korn Ferry Tour graduate Cameron Young.
