Grew up playing golf at Fargo Country Club, where his parents were members. Hoge says the club has a great par-3 course, recalling, "Starting when I was about three years old, I began tagging along with my parents and older brother, Charlie, and we went around the par 3 so many times I can't remember." Hoge also remembered playing 72 holes at the club one fall day when school wasn't in session.

Inducted into the Fargo South High School Hall of Fame in November 2022.

Inducted to the Texas Christian University Athletics Hall of Fame in October 2024, becoming the eighth men's golf inductee.

Graduated from TCU in 2011 with a double major in finance and accounting.

Played four seasons at Texas Christian University (2007-11), earning two collegiate victories and a 2011 All-Mountain West Conference honor; he completed his collegiate career with a 73.87 scoring average across 113 rounds.

Led TCU to the team title at the 2009 Mountain West Conference Championship, and finished T3 individually (along with Oklahoma State's Rickie Fowler and University of Southern California's Tom Glissmeyer) at the 2009 NCAA Championship, only finishing behind runner-up Kyle Stanley of Clemson and individual medalist Matt Hill of North Carolina State.

Won back-to-back Minnesota Amateur Golf Championships in 2009 and 2010.
